Services for William Harold Comer, age 40, an electrical foreman for the U S Corp of Engineers, will be at 10:00 am at Bracey-Welsh Funeral Home in Nashville. H Clyde Hale will officiate, and the burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery. Masonic rights will be at the grave by Jere Baxter Lodge No 742. The remains are at the funeral home. Mr. Comer died of a heart attack in his sleep yesterday morning at his home at 4805 Log Cabin Road. His wife, Harriet Sillers Comer, said he had complained of not feeling well on Friday but did not consider it to be serious. Born in Franklin, KY, he was the son of W R Comer, now of Nashville, and the former Miss Moore. He
came to Nashville as a boy and attended Jere Baxter School and Isaac Litton High School. He graduated from Vanderbilt with a B S Degree in 1937. He married here in 1938. He was employed in several departments of the Caterpillar Company in Peoria, IL, for almost six years. He had been employed with the Corp of Engineers for nearly four years. He was a member of the Jere Baxter Lodge, the Scottish Rite, and the Central Church of Christ. Other survivors are a son, William Terry Comer, and a daughter, Carol Comer, both of Nashville.

Anne Cooper Lord, 90, formerly of Concord, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at home after a long illness. She was born March 22, 1914, in Nashville, TN. the oldest of five children of Edwin W. and Hattie (Barnett) Cooper. She attended Nashville public and private schools. At Isaac Litton High School in Nashville, she was active in tennis and dramatics, president of the Glee Club, and co-captain of the basketball team. After high school, she received separate scholarships in basketball and opera, and she studied opera for a short time in New York City. She worked at National Life and Accident Insurance in Nashville for three years before joining American Airlines as an assistant to the Nashville Reservation and Ticket Manager. She loved her work in America during wartime, an exciting and important time in the fledgling airline industry. Through duties at Nashville Airport, she met her future husband Ned, who was stationed at adjoining Berry Field. They were married in Nashville on Oct. 17, 1945. Over the next 55 years, she made happy and beautiful homes for her husband and children in Elmsford, N.Y., and Hingham, Mass. Winchester Mass. Upper Montclair N.J. Towson Md. Limington, Maine, and Concord. She and Ned moved to Concord in 1996 and lived at Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Center. Her many natural gifts that inspired her husband and children included a musician's appreciation of melody and harmony, an artist's discernment of good form and design, and a scientist's curiosity about biology, astronomy, and the next frontier. She was loved and admired for her inner and outer beauty, vivacious manner, independent spirit, kindness, patience, sense of humor, courage, and Southern charm. She always had a way of turning the spotlight from herself to the other person, although her inner glow warmed everyone coming near. Enthusiastically, she would say, “Hello, darlin!” And one would feel safe and loved.

She died yesterday in Mobile Alabama. Funeral arrangements were incomplete. The body is at Radney Funeral Home in Mobile. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Harden, who was the former Miss Pearl Gill, was the sister of Captain J Paul Gill who is head of the traffic division of the Metro Police Department. She was born in Nashville on July 6, 1915, and received her education here. She and her husband moved to Mobile in 1942 where she was active in numerous civic organizations. Since moving to Mobile, she served on the board of directors of the Florence Crittenden Home; YMCA; Girl Scouts of Mobile; Community Chest and as treasurer of Church Woman for Government Street Presbyterian Church where she was a member. The survivors, in addition to her husband and brother are a daughter Mrs. Richard H. Jenney of Burbank CA and a sister Mrs. O J Vann of Nashville.

She loved her pets her beautiful country garden collecting antiques (especially Irish linens) and making wonderful Southern meals for her family. A true life "Rosie the Riveter" she was a sheet metal worker for the Army Air Corps in Smyrna, TN during WWII. She worked at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Richland, WA in the early years of the Cold War and later for the CA State Department of Consumer Affairs as a consumer advocate in Torrance, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents Karl and Mary Hardigg, brothers Oscar and George Hardigg, and sisters Marie Aswell and Eleanor Sneed. She is survived by a son Dr. C. Herbert Schiro of Yuba City, CA and a daughter Dr. Maria McGrane of Lander, WY; grandchildren Elena Bullard of Yuba City, CA and Derek Ochreiter of San Diego, CA; great grandson Logan Gordon of Del Mar, CA; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Miss Molly Hardy age 20 daughter of Dr and Mrs. W M Hardy of 1314 McChesney Avenue will be conducted at 3:00 pm this afternoon October 10, 1935, at the Vine Street Christiam Church by Dr Roger T Nooe, Dr George Miller and Rev Leonard Boynton of Lexington, KY. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Miss Hardy was a student at Transylvania College in Lexington and died at a Lexington Hospital Tuesday October 8, 1935, from injuries sustained in an automobile wreck the prior Saturday. The body of Miss Hardy, who was a senior, lay in state there Tuesday afternoon and memorial services were held at Morrison Chapel on the school campus on Wednesday. The body is now in the funeral home of M S Combs and Son located on West End at Centennial Park. Miss Hardy was well known here and was prominent in college activities. She was one of the colleges most popular students and was President of Phi Omega Pi Sorority and a member of Crimson Tompas Club, The Crook and Crones Club, and of the Women’s Pan Hellenic Council. In Nashville, she was one of the leaders of young people’s work at the Vine Street Christian Church. In addition to her parents who are former missionaries to Tibet, she is survived by two brothers William and John Hardy; sister Sarah Hardy; and grandparents Mrs. J W Hardy and Mrs. Eva Palmer.

Jr. (Jo Ann) Mobile, AL and Nolan (Kathy) Nashville, TN, stepdaughters Sherrill Trotter (Irby) and Rene Walker (David) of Nashville, TN, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren. Orphaned at age 10, he was raised in the Masonic Home, located on the grounds of the old TB Hospital in Inglewood, and could practically be seen from his backyard on Horseshoe Drive. He enjoyed visiting that area in later years. He was in the first graduating class of Isaac Litton High School in 1932. He was an excellent salesman and sold cars for several years, including at the first Crosley dealership in Nashville, TN. He worked for WNAH radio and had his own program, known as Daddy Rabbit, featuring local aspiring singers and Stringbean of the Grand Ole Opry. He was an accomplished musician himself, playing a variety of instruments. He finished his working career with Loyal American Life Insurance Co. but never really retired from working part-time until his death. Licensed by Inglewood Baptist Church, he preached in a small church built next to his home, where he held a final bible study class only five days before his passing. Funeral services were held at Phillips-Robinson, and he is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Claude W Shaffer, age 100, passed peacefully on Wednesday evening, April 20, 2011. He was one of seven children born to Josiah and Irma Shaffer. Claude Shaffer had a remarkable life and successful career at the E. Gray Smith Packard Company. Generous, sharp-witted, independent, and opinionated, Claude was a true gentleman. He's on record saying The whole Packard business was based on Quality, Respect, Trust, and Service. We were very considerate. We took good care of our people. He certainly did. To many current Packard owners and enthusiasts nationwide, Claude Shaffer represented the last direct connection with the 1930s Packard Motorcar Company Service operation. Characteristically, Mr. Shaffer, at age 100, was still offering sound Packard Automobile service advice as recently as one week ago. Claude Shaffer will be loved, missed, and remembered long into the future. Mr. Shaffer was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Smith) Shaffer, and his daughter, Dawn Shaffer. He is survived by his son Claude Woodruff Woody Shaffer (Wanda); grandchildren Steven Shaffer of Nashville and Katherine Booker (Dwayne) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and five great-grandchildren. Pauline Polly Fry, age 96, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of Decatur, Georgia, died on Friday, March 20, 2009. She was born October 22, 1912, in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Thomas and Mamie Shelton. Mrs. Fry was orphaned in 1921. On June 12, 1937, she married Boyd Ethridge Fry in Louisville, Kentucky, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Payton Shelton. Mrs. Fry lived in Nashville, TN; Louisville, KY; Memphis, TN; Atlanta; and Decatur, GA. Her husband was a Naval officer in World War II and managed theaters for Loew's, including the Loew's Grand Theater in Atlanta, GA, famous for its premier of the movie Gone With The Wind. She taught kindergarten in Decatur, GA, for 38 years at First Baptist Church and Arlynworth School near Emory University. Mrs. Fry was a member of Druid Hills Baptist Church for 67 years and taught Sunday School for 28 years. After the untimely death of her husband in 1957, Mrs. Fry raised two daughters as a single parent. She is survived by her two daughters, Olivia Fry Saunders of Owensboro, KY, and Paula Fry Elmore of Marietta, GA. In addition, she is survived by three grandchildren, Gerald W. Saunders Jr., Kendra J. Saunders, and Lt. Kevin Boyd Saunders, and by three great-grandchildren, Madison Saunders, Gerald W. Saunders III, and Ava Jean Saunders. Miss Walker was a member of the Belmont Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Leon Hinkle and Mrs. Charles Johnson, both of Nashville.

James Randall Wyatt, aged 81 years, was born May 02, 1913, and died Sunday, April 2, 1995, at a local infirmary. Survived by daughter Mrs Lynda Mayo of Brentwood, TN.; sons Judge J Randall Wyatt and Mark Wyatt, both of Nashville; sister Lillian Wyatt Cantrell of Madison, TN; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services at 1 pm Tuesday at All Saints Southern Episcopal Church 46th & Park Avenues, conducted by The Most Reverend Huron C Manning. Interment Spring Hill Cemetery. Family and Friends will serve as Pallbearers. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or the American Heart Association Visitation 2 -5 and 7-9 pm Monday at MARSHALL DONELLY COMBS.
